YouTube Transcript Not Available? Causes and Fixes
Why YouTube says transcript not available: disabled captions, privacy, language, music videos, and what to try before giving up.
Most common reasons
- Captions disabled by the uploader (common on music, some Shorts).
- Private, unlisted with restrictions, or age-gated videos.
- Live stream still live or not yet processed — try after VOD is published.
- Wrong language track — switch CC language on YouTube first.
- Region or embedding limits on rare uploads.
Quick checks on YouTube
- Open the video on desktop YouTube.
- Click the CC button — is any track listed?
- Try Show transcript under … More.
- If YouTube shows no transcript, third-party tools cannot magic one from captions either.
When captions exist but tools fail
- Confirm the URL is the full public link (not a playlist-only link).
- Try the 11-character video ID alone.
- For Shorts, use
/shorts/IDor standard watch URL. - Wait a few hours on brand-new uploads — auto-captions can lag.

No captions at all: real options
Caption-based tools (including Youtube Transcripto) read YouTube’s subtitle files — they do not re-transcribe audio. If CC is off, you need:
- Speech-to-text on downloaded audio (only if you have rights to the audio).
- Asking the creator to enable or upload captions.
- Choosing a different video that covers the same topic with captions on.
