Transcribe a YouTube Video From Its Captions

How to transcribe a YouTube video when captions exist. What a YouTube video transcriber can return, and what it cannot hear.

You are reading captions, not re-hearing the audio

People say “transcribe this YouTube video” and mean “give me the words.” On YouTube, those words are the caption track. A transcriber that uses captions is fast. It does not listen to the file again.

That is useful when captions exist. It is useless when the uploader turned them off.

Do it in one paste

  1. Copy the public URL. Shorts links work too.
  2. Paste it on the transcript page.
  3. Read the segments. Search a name. Copy the text or download it.

Manual captions are the better source. Auto-captions are a draft.

Audio to text, when the captions are missing

If you need the audio itself transcribed, you need a speech-to-text tool that accepts the sound. This site does not download the audio. It will not invent a transcript for a silent caption track.

For a public lecture that already has CC, start with the captions. Fix the names. Then keep the timestamps so you can check a line.

Use it on a real video.

Get a transcript or a summary from the captions.
