YouTube Subtitle Extractor: CC to Text or SRT

Pull YouTube subtitles and closed captions into text or an SRT file. What a CC downloader returns, and how to check it.

Captions and subtitles are the text track

On YouTube, CC is the caption button. The transcript panel is the same text, line by line. Extracting subtitles means saving that track, not recording the picture.

A longer comparison is in captions versus subtitles.

Save them as text or SRT

Paste the public URL into the transcript tool. Read the lines on the page, or download.

  • TXT for notes and drafts.
  • SRT for an editor. Each cue has a start and an end.
  • PDF or Word when you need a file with pages.

The SRT steps are also in download captions as SRT.

Read before you reuse

Auto CC is a rough pass. Names, numbers, and accents slip. If you will burn the SRT into another video, play a few cues against the sound first.

Use it on a real video.

Get a transcript or a summary from the captions.
