Turn a YouTube Lecture Into Notes

Make notes from a YouTube lecture or talk. Start with the transcript, then a short summary, and keep the timestamps.

Notes need the words, then a cut

A full transcript is a script. Notes are the parts you will look at again. Get both, in that order.

A way that stays honest

  1. Paste the lecture link into the transcript tool.
  2. Search for definitions and names.
  3. Open the summary for an overview and key points.
  4. Write the note in your own words. Leave a timestamp on anything you might rewatch.

Students already do a version of this in notes from class videos.

Do not file the auto-captions as finished notes

They skip board work, charts, and anything that was only on screen. If the grade depends on it, watch that minute.

Use it on a real video.

Get a transcript or a summary from the captions.
