How to Create YouTube Chapter Timestamps From a Transcript

Why chapters help viewers and search

Chapters improve watch session quality: viewers jump to relevant sections, and your description becomes a scannable outline. A timestamped transcript is the fastest map of where topics change.

Workflow

1. Generate a transcript with timestamps.
2. Skim for natural topic shifts (new section intros, slide changes, “next up”).
3. List 5–12 chapters; avoid micro-chapters every 20 seconds.
4. Ensure the first chapter starts at 0:00.
5. Paste into the YouTube description using the format below.

Quality rules
